Shortly after Dominic Thiem finished his first-round match at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Cristian Garin and Stan Wawrinka entered the center court of the Austrian capital. The next opponent of the defending champion from Lichtenwörth must be determined in this match.
Garin got off to a good start and took Wawrinka’s serve early; this break was enough for the world number 22 to take the first set. In the second round, “Stan the Man” initially missed three set balls at 5: 4, but in the tiebreaker the Swiss prevailed 11: 9 and sent the match into a decisive third set.

In this Garin again achieved an early pause. And as in section one, that was enough for the 24-year-old to win the set and therefore the match. 6: 4, 6: 7 (9) and 6: 3 was the final result from the point of view of the South American; on Thursday, Garin will meet local hero Dominic Thiem.
A few hours earlier, Grigor Dimitrov had already asserted himself in a highly anticipated game in two close rounds against Karen Khachanov. In addition to Thiem and Djokovic, Hubert Hurkacz, Lorenzo Sonego and Dan Evans also bought their ticket for the second round.
