After the curfew shock, the Turkish Minister of the Interior Suleyman Soylu announced his resignation on Sunday. He takes full responsibility for the curfew imposed in several cities on Friday and the consequences, Soylu said on Sunday night on Twitter. The turning point came only a little later: the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan he does not accept the resignation of his minister. Soylu will continue to serve, the president’s office said.
The Interior Ministry briefly imposed a curfew due to the Corona crisis for 48 hours in 31 cities or provinces, including the metropolises of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, on Friday night. The communication between the authorities had been severely criticized because the measure was only known two hours before the deadline and the details of the regulation were initially unclear. Therefore, on Friday night there were panic purchases and crowds of people in the affected cities.
Soylu wrote on Twitter that he had proudly served as Interior Minister and that he would become the Turkish President. Recep Tayyip Erdogan always stay faithful. The curfew should end at midnight.
Almost 57,000 infected
Turkey reported its first coronavirus case about a month ago. According to official information, Istanbul is the most affected. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announced on Sunday via Twitter that the number of infected had increased to 56,956. In 24 hours, 97 people died of Covid-19 lung disease, bringing the total number of fatalities to 1,198. More than 3,000 people have reportedly recovered.
