There is a risk of traffic jams for miles this coming weekend: Summer break will end for more than 2 million students in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland.
In Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, Bavaria and Croatia, the summer holidays end at the weekend. Therefore, ÖAMTC expects heavy traffic in Tyrol and Salzburg, as well as on the access roads to Vienna. Even if SARS-CoV-2 has greatly changed travel habits in 2020, the kilometers of traffic jams on transit routes in the west and at the borders will not be absent by the end of the holiday, according to traffic experts from ARBÖ .
Where traffic jams are feared, delays also in Vienna
Due to the end of the Bavarian holidays, traffic jams are expected, especially on the Fernpass route (B179), the Brenner motorway (A13) and the Inntal motorway (A12), according to ÖAMTC. But the Tauern Autobahn (A10) and later the Walserberg border crossing (A1) will also be congested. When entering Austria, longer waiting times are expected in the Karawanken tunnel on the A11 and in Spielfeld on the A9.
In eastern Austria, the ÖAMTC expects lively return traffic. You should expect delays, especially in the vicinity of Vienna, for example on the Süd Autobahn (A2) from Mödling.
Return traffic: busiest day of travel is Saturday
According to ARBÖ, the busiest travel day will again be Saturday this time. Starting in the morning, drivers must expect hours of delays when entering the country, especially at the borders. Experience shows that the “hot spots” will be the Karawanken tunnel in Carinthia, the border crossing of the Spielfeld highway in Styria and the border crossing of the Nickelsdorf highway in Burgenland. “This is especially due to the fact that the Karawanken and Spielfeld tunnel are the only border crossings for international travel between Austria and Slovenia next to the Loibl crossing. The Nickelsdorf highway border crossing is the only one open for international road traffic between Hungary and Austria “, says ARBÖ traffic expert Thomas Haider. . The length of the waiting time is not insignificant. Whether a lot of patience is required when leaving the country depends on the level of control of the Slovenian authorities and the application of the de facto ban on the entry of foreigners into Hungary.
In the course of the morning, there will be miles of traffic jams on the transit routes. In Tirol, the Fernpass route (B179) will likely be at the forefront of traffic jam reports. However, some patience will also be required on the Zillertalstrasse (B169), especially in front of the Brettfalltunnel, where block handling, as in front of the Lermoosertunnel on the B179, is not unlikely. There will be a similar picture on the Inntal motorway (A12) in front of the Kufstein / Kiefersfelden border. Besides the police checkpoints on the German side, the construction site is one of the causes of traffic jams. Two works on the German side, in the small German corner near Schneizelreuth and Unterjettenberg, will cause the longest traffic jams in Salzburg on Loferer Straße (B178) before the Steinpass border. Here a waste of time of an hour or more is very likely. A little patience will also be a good travel companion on the vertex section of the Tauern Autobahn (A10) and on the West Autobahn (A1) in the greater Salzburg area, especially before the Walserberg border. At Pyhrnautobahn (A9) in Upper Austria and Styria, there will be no shortage of traffic jams between the Gleinalm tunnel and the Sankt Michael junction, in the area between Kammern and Mautern and in front of the Klaus chain of tunnels.

“In general, the length of traffic jams on transit routes will probably not reach the values of previous years. Traffic jams will still last into the afternoon and at the borders possibly into the evening,” continues ARBÖ expert Thomas Haider.
Drivers should prepare for potential traffic jams with enough light supplies, non-alcoholic beverages, distraction for fellow travelers and most important companions, lots of patience, and alternative route plans.
ÖAMTC also expects hikers in good weather
Considerable traffic can be expected on access roads to excursion areas in good weather. From Lake Constance, past the Carinthian lakes, the Salzkammergut to Lake Neusiedl, access and exit routes will be tense in good weather.
