Lockers were illegally emptied in a total of three banks in Vienna and Lower Austria. Images have now been released showing two suspects each at crime scenes in Mödling and Klosterneuburg in the Tulln district. According to the broadcast, the attacks took place on November 13 in a uniform timeframe: the last day was Wednesday as the date of the attack.

According to the executive, the illegal activities around the automatic security system of a Bank Austria branch in Klosterneuburg took place on Friday of the previous week from 6.40 to 11.20 p.m. At the regional bank Mödlinger Raiffeisen, strangers went to work from exactly 8:07 p.m. to 11:11 p.m. A branch of Raiffeisen in Vienna-Döbling became the scene of the crime between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. In all the blows, the wanted left the respective bank with bags or backpacks.

Witness call after safe emptying in Vienna and Lower Austria

The Lower Austrian State Criminal Police Office questioned potential witnesses over a broadcast on Saturday about suspicious perceptions in the vicinity of the three crime scenes. Specifically, sightings of a parked escape vehicle, the observation of the disappearance of said vehicle with at least two people packed with luggage on board or indications of a leak in public transport were addressed.

In the case of the Mödling coup, police specifically pointed to the pink jacket worn by one of those wanted. In video recordings of the scene in the district capital of Lower Austria, it can also be seen that the two perpetrators fled the main street on the left towards Freihofgasse, which leads to Franz-Keim-Gasse. A few minutes earlier, a man is said to have been there with two dogs. Like all other witnesses, this person was asked to report to the Lower Austrian Regional Criminal Police Office (Tel: 059 133 30 3048).

Empty safe deposit boxes: SAAM wants to clarify liability issues

In the case of the illegally emptied lockers from a total of three banks in Lower Austria and Vienna, the consumer protection association (VSV) demanded on Saturday that the liability issue be clarified. President Peter Kolba emphasized in a broadcast that the respective financial institution should be responsible for the functionality of the technical systems in the self-service safes. He appealed to the Consumer Information Association (VKI) to initiate representative action.

In the general terms and conditions of banks, liability for deposits in custody accounts is limited to an amount of 3,000 to 4,000 euros. Full liability exists only in the case of gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the financial institution. “This is an old problem that has now been legally resolved for payment cards and where, if the customer was not grossly negligent, his liability is limited to 50 euros. But that does not apply to secure systems,” emphasized Kolba. Also in this area, if there are functional problems of a technical nature, the bank “that uses the system and therefore generates sales” must be responsible.

The SAAM will help the injured person to exercise their rights. In addition, Kolba advocated for the legitimization of representative actions of independent organizations such as the consumer protection association. The social partners and the VKI are currently considered eligible.
