Emergency shutdown? In Lower Austria and Upper Austria, one in four students goes to school

How many come, how many stay at home?

On Monday it was unclear how many students would come to the schools despite the closure. An initial survey by the Ministry of Education shows that it is around 15 percent nationwide, with strong regional differences:

In some classes, the numbers were likely significantly higher, but also significantly lower, the ministry explains.

Specifically, it was reported:

  • In Vienna, about 15% of the students were in school on day 1 of closure 2.
  • In Lower Austria it was significantly higher than 25 percent, as was the case in Upper Austria (25%).
  • In Burgenland it was only eight percent, the lowest value in a comparison of the federal states.
  • In Carinthia it was 16%, in Styria 8%, in Salzburg it was 14%, in Tyrol it was 15% and in Vorarlberg it was 13%.

That means: perhaps contrary to expectations that children need care, especially in cities, the federal states of Lower Austria and Upper Austria surprised by far the highest child care rates.

Federal Minister Heinz Faßmann expressed his satisfaction in an opening statement: “The schools have adapted well to the new situation. I know this requires a lot of flexibility. My thanks to all school partners who understand the situation. “
