A tragedy struck Bosnia on New Year’s Eve. Eight young men and women were killed in a weekend home.
In Bosnia-Herzegovina, eight young people died at a New Year’s Eve party at a weekend home. The four men and women in their 20s succumbed to smoke poisoning, Croatian news agency Hina reported, citing police. The eight youths reportedly retired to the weekend home at a local recreation area near Posusje in western Herzegovina to celebrate the new year.
Strict rules
The cause of the tragedy is still being investigated in the municipality of Posusje, in the southwest of the country. Carbon monoxide poisoning is not uncommon in the Balkans. This can happen when highly toxic, but difficult to perceive gas flows from faulty stoves or fireplaces.
These kinds of private parties were organized in large numbers this time in Bosnia. People bypassed the blockade that the authorities had imposed due to the corona pandemic. The measures include, among other things, a ban on public events with more than 30 participants, the closure of all restaurants at 11 p.m. and a nightly curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
