Lower Austria Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) defends the Easter blockade of eastern Austria, which experts have criticized as being too brief.

They have “taken steps to reduce the number of infections.” State Councilor Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig (SPÖ) emphasized that politics must follow experts in the pandemic.

The number of intensive care beds can be increased in the “worst case”

While the situation with intensive care bed capacity in Vienna is already very tense, the problem in Lower Austria is currently “far from being of this magnitude,” Mikl-Leitner said on the sidelines of a news conference in St. Pölten. “We can still take good care of Covid intensive care patients in the coming weeks.” In the “worst case”, Lower Austria could increase the number of intensive care beds.

“The next ten weeks are crucial,” emphasized Mikl-Leitner. By this date, people aged 50 and over who decide to receive an injection should be vaccinated in Lower Austria. Testing, vaccination, and self-discipline are crucial to fighting the pandemic.

Mikl-Leitner against closing the trade

In Lower Austria, more than a week ago, they began to “take very tough measures,” Mikl-Leitner said, referring to the exit controls from March 13 in the high-incidence area of Wiener Neustadt. From (today) Thursday, a negative corona test must also be performed when leaving the Wiener Neustadt-Land and Neunkirchen districts.

The governor had spoken in the run-up to the summit in favor of open stores, now the stores will be closed from Holy Thursday until April 6 (with the exception of articles of daily use). A prolonged store closure would have caused financial and emotional damage and thousands of jobs would be lost, Mikl-Leitner said. Again he emphasized: “Infections do not occur commercially.”

Politics must not ignore the experts

The goal is also to test as many workers as possible. In the Wiener Neustadt region with a high proportion of migrants, some parts of the population appear to have an “inhibition threshold” to try or it is “culturally undesirable”. In cooperation with the economy, residents who have not yet been tested must also undergo the test.

Health Councilor Königsberger-Ludwig emphasized that politics should not ignore the advice of experts. She described the Easter blockade of the East as “another step to roll back the virus.” However: “The best measure does not help if people do not support it,” he appealed to those affected, among other things, to make their contact persons known.
