HCB Südtirol Alperia started the new calendar year with a win against Red Bull Salzburg. One player rose above it all.
January 01, 2021
Dustin Gazley has proven time and again this season that he is a brilliant ice hockey player. In recent weeks (and during the injury-related absence of his sympathetic attacking partner Dan Catenacci), however, the American has finally matured to become a really important number in Bolzano’s ranks; he was very supportive of him on New Years Day. The Foxes won a turbulent game against Salzburg by 5: 4 after a penalty shoot-out, in which Gazley (a former bull, by the way) directly participated in 3 shots from Bolzano and, icing on the cake, sank the decisive penalty . It is clear from Friday at the latest: Bolzano has a new ice hockey star.
It was a hard-fought and well-deserved victory for the Foxes, who continue to lead the table at the same pace as Fehervar. Against Salzburg, Bolzano’s team showed a gala performance, especially in the first third, in which the “Red Bulls” were apparently surprised by the vivacity and speed of the Talferstadters. There’s a reason Bolzano didn’t hit all three: the Irish company’s outnumbered play is and will continue to be the big problem in the new year. Against Salzburg he caught 3 of the 4 hits with one man less, of the last 8 goals they conceded 6 outnumbered. The death penalty still does not work. However, it should also be noted that the Salzburg referees whistled very petty against the HCB and thus repeatedly attracted discontent from the South Tyrolese.
Halmo is back in impressive form
Bozen had to dispense with the injured Irving, Fazio, Tauferer and Youds, as well as the ailing Anthony Bardaro on New Year’s Day, but Mike Halmo returned to the team. And after his 3-game suspension, this Halmo came in as tarantula-stung – a lot of fighting, a lot of passion, a lot of danger and a goal at the end – the Canadian is a real asset to the Foxes.
Paul Huber (left) and Eppaner Peter Hochkofler (right) face Gleason Fournier from Bolzano.
However, the fireworks were opened by Gleason Fournier, who triggered a timer after just 4 minutes. Then Bolzano dominated at will, but the local team came out of nowhere to equalize when Mario Huber appeared alone in front of Andy Bernard and took the opportunity (11th). Gazley (with a pirouette turn, 16th) and Halmo (after a pure act of will, 20th) ensured clear conditions in the first third.
Bolzano suffers from being outnumbered
Salzburg were better after the break, overcoming a Thomas Raffl goal to connect (26). The joy did not last long, because 4 minutes later Stefano Giliati kept his nerves after a dream pass from Gazley against Salzburg substitute Jesper Eliasson (he was preferred to JP Lamoureux) (30th) – 4: 2. Again just 2 minutes then it was Justin Schütz who pushed a rebound in the majority and kept the Austrians’ hopes alive with 3: 4.
Bolzano then couldn’t get away, so the Bulls in the final third, and again with one more man on the ice, came 4: 4 through Rick Schofield (47th). Nothing changed about that, so there was a shooting. And here Dustin Gazley showed all his skills and all the coolness and shot Bozen to the first win in 2021.
Bolzano continues on Sunday at 4.30 pm with the home game against Dornbirn.
