The television duel between the US presidential candidates is said to have turned the race for the White House upside down.
It doesn’t always benefit those who argue better, and it’s often the little things that stick in the mind. It’s been that way since the first performance in 1960, when the sweaty Richard Nixon looked bad to the telegenic John F. Kennedy.
Or when George HW Bush, who would later lose the election, looked at his watch when asked by a voter about the debt crisis in 1992, as if he had better things to do.
Now the television debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden is given special importance. In fact, it should be a particularly violent exchange of blows. The first public meeting of the two competitors in this heavily-led election campaign takes place on Wednesday night. In Cleveland, Ohio, the two men will duel for 90 minutes.
Trump is running out of time
And the stakes are high: incumbent Trump has tried many times in the past twelve months to harm Biden; for example, he has forced the Ukrainian government to investigate the Democrats, ridiculed him as a senile old man or as the fifth column of rioters. The metropolitan streets of the United States are represented. None of this had a lasting impact on the political mood: Biden continues to lead all the polls.
Trump is running out of time, especially as elections in numerous states have already started with “early voting” in person or by letter. He has to face Biden in a television duel.
Observers look forward to an equally hot evening, exactly five weeks before the November 3 election date. It is the meeting of two very different communicators. In one corner, the current Trump, who prefers to attack personally rather than content himself, interrupts his counterpart, uses falsehoods in high doses and does not shy away from insults. He acts spontaneously and communicates with simple messages.

In the other corner, Joe Biden, who made some checkered appearances in internal party debates last year. At times he seemed overwhelmed and got caught up in her responses. Trump accuses him of a lack of mental aptitude and mocks him as “Sleepy Joe” (Joe’s dream). That shouldn’t happen to Biden on Tuesday in the first of a total of three debates.
