Dominik Landertiger says goodbye to the biathlon. After great success, he mainly ran after his best performance.

Former biathlon world champion Dominik Landertinger announced his retirement on Sunday at the age of 32.

“Now is the right time to stop,” quotes the Tyrolean in a message from the Austrian Ski Association: “Since my intervertebral disc surgery, I have had difficult years where I have often run after my accomplishments. Continuing my career. it would be my body and greedy for my health. ”

With four Olympic medals, five World Cup medals and 37 World Cup podiums, Landertinger is the most successful Austrian biathlete. However, after a lumbar spine operation in 2017, he was rarely able to build on previous successes; the surprising bronze medal at the 2020 World Cup in Antholz remained a rare exception.

“I really wanted to stop in December,” said the 2009 massive start world champion: “After long deliberations, I put everything on a card, wanted to mobilize all my strength again and leave nothing unproven. The decision was correct, but I I also noticed that this effort cannot be carried out in the long term. ”

Landertinger wants to stay connected to sport in a broader sense and focus initially on health management in companies. During his career, he had also acquired a biathlon coach license.
