Measured in absolute terms, even more fans in Germany have the 2020 US Open final between Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem than in Austria: an average of 800,000 spectators watched the game in just over four hours on Eurosport.
Relative to the size of the population, Thiem’s attractiveness in his home country was many times greater. Over the entire duration of the game, there were an average of 400,000 fans who followed the 27-year-old Lower Austrian Grand Slam first hit on ServusTV. Which means a market share of almost 30 percent among viewers twelve and older.
The exact process during the broadcast on ServusTV was as follows:
10:17 pm – 417,000 spectators attended the start of the match.
10:57 pm – The absolute top is reached with 526,000 viewers.
11:21 pm – 497,000 viewers – although Dominic Thiem is not doing well in the second set.
11:36 pm – Thiem loses second set – hits 394,000
12:00 AM – 373,000 are still there at midnight.
12:27 AM – A raise to 404,000 when Dominic wins the third set.
01:09 am – 320,000 are there when Thiem handles the sentence setting
1:15 am – Lowest: 290,000 when Alexander Zverev sets up 1: 1 in the fifth set.
02:08 am – Another boost to 354,000 viewers when the tiebreaker begins!
02:19 am – Still an incredible 334,000 spectators at the ball game!
