reThe famous Nebra Sky Disc can still be considered the oldest astronomical representation in the world, according to the researchers. This was announced by the Saxony-Anhalt Office of State Monuments under the title “Scientific Crime Solved”. The authority cites a publication in the specialized magazine “Archaeologia Austriaca”, which denies doubts about the dating of the celestial disc.

Two German prehistorians had published an article this year and claimed that the disc did not come from the Bronze Age, but from the Iron Age. This would make the find about a thousand years younger than previously assumed. However, a group of researchers has now confirmed the assumption that the celestial disk can be assigned to the early Bronze Age and is therefore estimated to be between 3,700 and 4,100 years old.

The round bronze plate with golden images of the moon and stars is one of the most important archaeological finds in Germany and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. It was found in 1999 during robbery excavations near Nebra in Saxony. -Anhalt, according to the theft, along with Bronze Age swords, axes and arm ornaments. In 2002, the disc was seized in Switzerland.

In its current analysis, the research group refers, among other things, to judicial declarations of the robbery graves, as well as comparisons of soil samples and soil residues adhered to the disc and other findings that left no doubt about the Mittelberg location. Furthermore, the copper sky disc and accompanying finds come from the same deposit in Salzburger Land. The production of this copper stopped before the beginning of the Iron Age.
