Discussion of the tax on online advertising

In order to effectively tax Internet companies, a digital tax on online advertising was introduced in Austria. Industry leader Google has announced that it will pass the resulting costs on to customers starting November 1.

Therefore, the Chamber of Commerce has called for a “reorganization of the regulations.” Gerald Fleischmann, Chancellor’s Representative for Media Issues, rejects it, but has an alternative proposal for home economics: it should be advertised more in home media.

On January 1, Austria introduced a digital tax through an increased advertising tax of five percent, which is specifically targeted at large international internet companies like Google. “As it turns out now, the digital tax ultimately does not affect foreign Internet giants, but all those Austrian companies that advertise on Google,” criticized Martin Sonntag, chairman of WKÖ’s Federal Internet Commerce Committee, in a broadcast on Friday.
