St. Pölten – A spectacular prisoner’s escape keeps Lower Austrian police on edge. Meanwhile, his escape aides have been arrested.
A prisoner at St. Pölten Prison seized the opportunity to escape on Saturday night after receiving outpatient hospital treatment. The 27-year-old Romanian citizen escaped from his guards upon leaving St. Pölten University Hospital. He escaped on foot and three assistants took him away in the car while he was still in the city. The prison guards fired multiple shots into the air and at the escape vehicle while pursuing them. No one was injured.

Taxis with escape assistants stopped by the police
The quartet parked the car in town a little later. The three escape attendants then took two taxis, which they headed along the Westautobahn in the direction of Vienna. After a driver alerted the police, the police stopped taxis in the Steinhäusl area. That night, two Romanians aged 26 and 40 and a 21-year-old Croatian citizen were arrested.
The search for the escaped prisoner was still continuing Sunday. He had not been in the taxis and probably continued his escape in another way.
The Romanian is 175 cm tall, stout and has short hair. He wears civilian clothes and a bandage on his left hand. According to the judiciary, he should not have been in custody for violent or sexual crimes. (WHAT, TT)
