The Verein gegen Tierfabriken (VGT) has documented the conditions at a pig farm in Styria and has criticized it harshly. One piquant detail: the company carries the WADA seal of approval.
Approximately 1000 pigs are kept in the operation of the president of the Styrian pig farming and the deputy president of the Austrian pig farming cooperative Pig Austria. The VGT describes the operating conditions as the “only catastrophe.”
The photos and a video show pigs obviously standing and lying in their own droppings and kept in cramped conditions on full or partial slatted floors. The VGT also documented injured, sick and even dead animals.
Vorarlberg animal protection activist and VGT employee Sandy P. Peng is harshly critical of the situation: “This terrible operation proves once again that in Austria we need a ban on non-specific mesh flooring and (!) soft litter for all pigs! That pigs have to be inches deep in the feces even in the company of a swine industry official, without sand.
In view of these images, the VGT calls for a ban on fully slatted floors combined with a mandatory deep straw bedding for all pigs, not only in the fattening area, but also in rearing farms.
To this end, the VGT has started a petition against slatted floors and sand for pigs.
