An Innviertler made an extraordinary find at the weekend in the Sauwald community of Mnzkirchen (Schrding district). The farmer found the corpse of a dead wolf in one of his fields. It is still unclear where the animal came from. Wolves haven’t been home in Innviertel for decades.
“The find is unusual. There have been no wolves in the area for 100 years,” says Franz Konrad Stadler, district mayor of Schrding. After the farmer informed a hunter, he also called the representative of the wolves of the province of Upper Austria. Meanwhile, it seems clear that the wolf must have been struck by a car on Thursday or Friday and then crawled about 250 meters into the field. Then he died there.
“The wolf must be about a year old and weigh about 50 kilograms. Where it came from in Innviertel now the experts need to clarify,” says the mayor of the Schrdingen district. The corpse was handed over to the Veterinary University of Vienna to clarify where the wolf could have come from. “A DNA sample was taken from the animal. When the result of the analysis is available, we will know more,” says Stadler.
“With only 30 to 35 individuals, the wolf is the rarest native mammal. Therefore, every dead animal is a painful loss,” says Christian Pichler, a wolf expert at the environmental association WWF Austria.
Wolves in the south of the country.
In the summer, several animals were killed by wolves in the south of the country. Experts believe that there are three wolves there. On May 30, two hinds fell victim to the wolf in Steyrling. On June 1, he struck at Unterach and killed a sheep and its lamb.
