Sepp Laubner would have celebrated his 71st birthday on October 25. By the 1970s, the artist reported a major exhibition in Bayreuth last fall and presented new images at the Eisenstadt cultural center.
Even then he spoke of his illness, but at the same time he was full of will to live: “I do what is good for me.”
Last but not least, he was referring to painting, with strong colors and a good mood. With these colors and his cheerful way, the artist is also remembered. Sepp Laubner died Friday morning with his family.
The art scene is in mourning
Laubner has been one of the best known representatives of Burgenland art since the 1980s, received the state scholarship in 1982, to be followed by numerous awards, and began a lively exhibition activity throughout Austria and internationally.
Before that, together with Robert Schneider, who died the year before, and many other friends, he had laid the foundation stone of a true monument to this scene: the Cselley Mill at Oslip.
Not only did the most famous artists of all genres make guest appearances there, they also started numerous careers there, and young people still have the same opportunity today. And in Sepp Laubner’s studio at the Cselley Mühle, his art was created: the paintings with the unmistakable brushstrokes that now hang in so many prominent places.
“I always work on several images at the same time, each image opens the door to another. You dance and hold the brush in hand until you do the decisive driver, so things can continue again. I don’t put this aside. I always mean it. ” This is how Sepp Laubner described his work in an interview with BVZ.
Doskozil: “Irreplaceable loss for the cultural region of Burgenland”
Governor and cultural adviser Hans Peter Doskozil is also deeply affected personally: “Sepp Laubner was probably the best known and most successful Burgenland artist of his generation for a reason. Like no other, he understood how to translate the lifestyle and landscape of our federal state into compositions of unmistakable colors. That made him an ambassador for Burgenland painting. “
Sepp Laubner co-founded modern painting in Burgenland and has thus become a role model for many young artists. “Laubner was a pioneer and pioneer of contemporary art in Burgenland, with all its vitality and diversity,” Doskozil emphasized.
He also shaped Burgenland’s cultural landscape through his many years of activity at the Cselley Mill, which he “invented” together with Robert Schneider, who also died too early, and turned it into an institution. “During these difficult hours, my condolences go out to the family members of Sepp Laubner, especially his wife,” said the governor.
In May, a major exhibition on the artist’s work is planned at the Burgenland State Gallery.
Numerous other representatives of public life paid tribute to the artistic work. ÖVP state party chair Christian Sagartz and culture spokesperson Walter Temmel were also deeply affected and recalled Laubner’s formative role for art in Burgenland: “Like no other, he conveyed creativity and uniqueness in his art. His works will do this even after his death. “
The mayor of Eisenstadt, Thomas Steiner, also recalled the joie de vivre that the artist was able to convey: “Sepp Laubner was not only a great artist and artist of Eisenstadt, but also a great person who loved life, enjoyment and every corner of Burgenland. Green state spokeswoman Regina Petrik Laubner recalls: “He did not retire to his study, but always conversed with people, both at very official receptions and in the pub. Burgenland will miss him very much. “
Viticulture Chairman Andreas Liegenfeld also recalled Laubner’s role as an “international ambassador”, who was able to capture Burgenland’s attitude towards life in his images: “With the passing of Sepp Laubner, the Burgenland wine industry not only it loses a great ambassador who contributed to it with his art To inspire people internationally for wine, but also many Burgenland winemakers are losing a personal friend. “
ÖVP Undersecretary General Gaby Schwarz and Maria Großbauer, cultural spokesperson for the ÖVP parliamentary club, were equally concerned: “Sepp Laubner was an active person, a thinker, a cultural ambassador and a friend for many decades.”
Secretary of State Andrea Mayer praised the artist’s work: “Sepp Laubner was one of Burgenland’s greats, a cultural ambassador and a figurehead of the Austrian visual arts. Painting and drawing were his foundation and elixir of life. With his paintings he told powerful stories with soul. “
Martinipreis
Sepp Laubner was also closely related to the history of the Martini Award, which has been awarded by the BVZ since 2012 for outstanding achievements in the fields of culture, business, sport, engagement and “Our Future”. Laubner designed the BVZ Martini, which made it very popular as an art object from the beginning. In 2012, the jury of experts in the culture section selected Cselley Mühle: Robert Schneider, Eveline Lehner, Sepp Laubner, Hans Bögl and their team were awarded the award for decades of commitment in the name of art.
