The fire broke out around 1:15 a.m. Surveys into the cause of the fire are still ongoing. Fire department forces assume a fire has started in the mattress area. Then the flames spread throughout the hotel room and hit the window.
A guest from the Hamburg hotel was in the room. Before the arrival of the Linz firefighters, policemen Armin Lumpelegger (36) and Jürgen Ruckendorfer (41) from the special services department were already there. They pounded on the closed door with a ram. “Armin Lumpelegger is active in the Waldburg volunteer fire brigade near Freistadt and he knew exactly how to behave in the best possible way,” police report. The two officers first waited for the fire to react to the supply of fresh air, then came to the aid of the hotel guest.
The man was lying on the ground in the entrance area. Obviously, he was seriously injured and showed no reaction. Tongues of flame blazed at the back of the room and dark smoke gathered on the ceiling. Police used a hand-held fire extinguisher to cool the area enough to remove the casualty from the room and into the hallway.
After receiving care at the Kepler University Clinic in Linz, the German was airlifted to Vienna General Hospital, where he is currently being treated in the intensive care unit.
Linz’s professional fire brigade was able to prevent the fire from spreading further.
