Matthias Walkner had to bury his ambitions of winning the Dakar Rally in the desert sand after the second stage.

The Salzburg KTM rider lost more than two hours on Monday after a technical defect shortly before the first waypoint at kilometer 46 and fell back to the end of the 95-man motorcycle field. Walkner is 2:15 hours behind the leader Joan Barreda.

Walkner will report exactly what happened after the 457km stage at the finish.

With third place, Walkner had a successful start to the desert rally. A podium or even a victory now seems out of reach after the troubles. After the first stage, Walkner’s Australian colleague Toby Price leads 31 seconds ahead of Kevin Benavides (ARG / Honda).
