SV Ried’s board made the decision on Tuesday to release former head coach Gerald Baumgartner. On Sunday, Gerhard Schweitzer will step in as interim coach before the newcomer looks for a new coach. As the Kronen newspaper reported that a prominent international coach applied for SV Ried: Sven-Göran Eriksson. Consequently, the former head of the England team is said to have talked about a coach in Riedern. However, the Swedish consultancy has denied this rumor.
The 72-year-old Swede has coached well-known clubs in his coaching career so far. Eriksson coached Lisbon Benfica from July 1982 to June 1984 and from July 1989 to June 1992. In the meantime, he worked for AS Roma and Fiorentina. He was also the coach of Lazio Roma and Sampdoria Genoa.
From January 2001 to July 2006, the Swede was the head coach of the English team. With the English, he reached the quarterfinals in both the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
In England, the now 72-year-old coached Manchester City and Leicester City. Most recently, he was the team leader in the Philippines.
