Recently, a young woman was insulted on so-called social networks. In an interview with ZDF’s “heute journal”, she said that she and her friends “miss the celebration.” Mind you, he said this in the midst of the corona pandemic. He expressed this sentiment on television cameras as the future of the free world was being negotiated in the US election campaign and while in many other places human rights were suppressed by war and violence. With all due respect, is this young woman stupid?
Of course, no. And there is also a federal government spot in which an elderly white man remembers the year 2020 in the manner of a fictional documentary, in which he became a hero as a young man because he stayed at home on the sofa and thus in his self-transfiguration contained the pandemic (“We were lazy as raccoons”).
A satire. A joke. A serious matter in Germany. Especially since the video of the government spokesman Steffen Seibert was personally distributed on Twitter.
Isn’t this video stupid? So this is now being discussed again on social media. Do you remember an old white man? What about single mothers? With the cleaning man from Eastern Europe? With people who are experiencing real existential concerns? What is this contempt? Who paid for it? What society is it supposed to represent?
Now. You don’t have to live in a parallel society or risk desperately trying to ingratiate yourself with young people if you say there’s a time in life when the next party, next kiss, or aimlessly hanging out with friends is an emergency. which seems as big as the question of how a freelancer should raise the rent over the next month.
Do the Self-Check: In the face of a global pandemic, all disputes about housework, lateness, or jealousy should have been resolved in the last few months. But of course he went on living, arguing, and blaspheming, simply because his own life always feels more immediate and larger.
Playing a young man in his twenties against a single mother doesn’t do him justice. In any case, we do not balance the suffering between us. Of course, the federal government should also take into account female, queer, or socially different classes in its promotional videos. Perhaps even more conscientious than average Alman.
But if you put all the concerns raised into one video, it would be the most boring place in the world. It is true that it is exactly what one would have expected from the federal government. (For the sake of integrity: there is also a second video from a woman’s point of view that establishes a conscious counterpoint to the bio-German man.)
Instead, a highly official satirical video is now being discussed, which could also be performed in this way on a show like “Late Night Berlin”, and which happened to be produced there as well. And while it is still debated whether this video will reach the correct target group or exclude other target groups, it is already spreading faster online than any well-intentioned campaign by the Federal Agency for Civic Education. In reality, the goal has already been achieved, and all of us, including this comment, contribute to it. Because so far there has been little criticism of the basic message: stay home!
