Garmisch-Partenkirchen – After a violent Corona outbreak in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) is calling for consequences for the alleged perpetrator. “If the woman is confirmed to have deliberately ignored the quarantine despite clear corona symptoms, she should expect a hefty fine,” Herrmann said. Munich Mercury (Monday). “Against such cruelty, a clear signal and an example of a warning must be given that anyone who violates the rules in this particular pandemic situation and deliberately puts others at risk should expect sensitive sanctions.”
For the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Söder, women are “a model case of irrationality.” After a cabinet meeting in Munich, he demanded a hefty fine.
Investigations started
The Munich II prosecutor’s office launched an investigation for negligent bodily injury. A spokeswoman for the prosecutor said the exact facts must now be determined. The suspect is one of the civilian personnel of the US armed forces in Germany. However, according to the NATO troop status, the German authorities can investigate them. The penalty for negligent bodily injury ranges from a fine to three years in prison.
The responsible district office assumes the outbreak is due to a so-called super spreader. The 26-year-old is said to have wandered various pubs in the market town at the foot of the Zugspitze and infected several people in the process. According to the authority, he has already had symptoms in the bar crawl and has been awaiting the results of his corona test. In Bavaria, violations of quarantine requirements can result in a 2,000 euro fine.

“The lady had symptoms, she was with us at the test station and she was asked to remain in quarantine due to the symptoms. But she did not do that,” said district office spokesman Stephan Scharf. The 26-year-old had just returned from a vacation in Greece. It is not clear if he was infected on the trip or later in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. “We don’t know where it got infected.”
Appeal to the population
“There are more cases where people don’t wait for the test result,” Scharf said. “And nationality doesn’t really matter. But we wanted as many people to be contacted as possible who remembered having contact with the woman in a bar in recent days.” To facilitate the identification of potential contact persons, the authority published the fact that the woman is an American living and working in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Because it has not yet been possible to trace all contact persons, health authorities are asking those who were in local bars tonight or earlier to contact the health department hotline (Tel. +49 ( 0) 8821 / 751-500) and take the test. The appeal is mainly aimed at young people between 18 and 35 years old, who may have been infected, are invited to get tested.
24 tested positive at the hotel
According to Scharf, 24 people have so far tested positive in a hotel where the woman works. Overall, the number of new infections for Saturday was 37. The seven-day incidence was 54 and therefore above the critical mark of 50 new infections per 100,000 population in seven days. “Of course, not everyone has to be infected with it,” Scharf emphasized. 453 positive cases have been detected in the district since the start of the Corona crisis.
“From a medical point of view, a significant increase in infections is expected in the district,” the district office said, imposing restrictions on public life in the commercial city of about 26,000 residents on Friday. “We want to end the nightlife that triggered it.”
Group size limited to five people
All restaurants must close by 10 pm Only a maximum of five people can meet in the public space; this also applies to all restaurants. For private events, the number of participants is limited to a maximum of 50 people in closed rooms or up to 100 people outdoors.
Due to the high number of infections, two demonstrations planned for the weekend were also canceled: the “Ausbremst is” event and a gathering of farmers protesting against the spread of wolves in Bavaria.
On Twitter there was resentment over the woman’s behavior described by the district office. “A look at Garmisch currently shows an example that the common sense and will of the individual cannot be assumed. What a shame,” someone wrote there. It is one of the kindest posts. (dpa)
