More than thrombosis: how the virus affects the blood and why it is not a good idea to take prophylactic anticoagulants before vaccines.
Serious Covid illnesses are known to lead to thrombosis. Also, anticoagulant drugs have a positive effect on the course. Preparations such as heparin are used as a standard for therapy in hospitals. What is also known, however, is that drugs (Plavix, aspirin) that prevent thrombosis in other ways, that is, by directly inhibiting thrombocytes, blood platelets, do not seem to help.
Alice Assinger from the Research Institute for Vascular Biology and Thrombosis at the Center for Physiology and Pharmacology at the Medical University of Vienna is investigating the role platelets play in Covid. He was a leader in the development of the test that can predict the survival probability of Covid hospital patients. Consequently, the decrease in platelet count, among other things, indicates a lower probability of survival, presumably because the platelets are trapped in the thrombi and do not fit in the needle.
“We have followed Covid patients over time and we have seen that in those with a worse course, platelets are more activated, that is, they tend to form thrombi. However, at the same time, they no longer work as well, ”says Assinger.
