“You are the first,” says a nurse, Pastor Daniel Kostrzycki at the St. Pölten University Hospital blood bank. Donating blood is nothing new to Kostrzycki, which is why he has been to the blood bank 93 times. This time it is something very special. After surviving Corona disease, antibodies were formed against the insidious virus in her blood. The plasma obtained from this can save lives. It can be used to treat patients who currently have the disease.
Kostrzycki fell ill with COVID-19 in early March. At the time, he did not want to cancel the planned parish council meeting, but he was already feeling ill. At first he thought about the flu. In order not to infect anyone, he decided on bed. The next day I already had a high fever and chills. He immediately contacted the COVID hotline. There, by remote diagnosis, they assured him that he probably had normal flu and that he should see a family doctor. The priest did not give up and finally tested positive for COVID-19 after more than a week. “I can’t rebuild where I got infected. But now I am happy to help other people with my blood after I have survived the disease, “says Daniel Kostrzycki.
Donors must be between 18 and 68 years old and have a body weight of more than 50 kilograms. With a special medical certificate, donations over 68 are also possible. Before the first donation, all donors undergo a detailed medical examination, including anamnesis and laboratory diagnoses. Regular checkups are mandatory for multiple donors.
Exclusion criteria under the guidelines include certain existing or lived infectious diseases, pregnancy, alcoholism, drug addiction, serious chronic diseases such as heart and vascular diseases, or malignant tumors.
450 ml of blood is drawn, the donation usually only takes a few minutes. After the donation, there is a small reward: wine, honey or chocolate.
The priest is no longer a stranger to the blood bank due to his numerous donations. This is why he joked when he visited: “If we have staff shortages during the vacation period, we will take you to our support. You already know your way around here. “
