200 million euros for acquisitions
Research on a Covid-19 vaccine has been carried out around the world since March, and the procurement and distribution of the vaccine have been negotiated at the EU level since June. All countries have the same rights, Anschober emphasizes, all countries receive the vaccine at the same time and under the same conditions. “In Europe no one is left alone on this issue.”
The EU has set a very high budget: 2.7 billion euros, an investment in health and safety, according to Anschober. In Austria, a budget of € 200 million has been established for acquisitions.
50 percent of Austrians should get vaccinated
When vaccines can start depends, of course, on market approvals, according to Anschober, who should be ready for the first or second product by the end of the year. In January awaits the first vaccines in Austria.
The goal is vaccination coverage of 50 percent or more. “The higher the vaccination coverage, the gradually lower the risk,” said Anschober, who expects a lively turnout. The vaccination plan will be presented to the Council of Ministers on Wednesday. For comparison: only about 10 percent of Austrians are vaccinated against the flu.
Austria should have 16.5 million doses of vaccines, added Auer, special representative at the Ministry of Health. There could be a million in January and February, and another two in March. In the third trimester, everyone who wants to get vaccinated should get vaccinated, says Auer, who feels responsible for the “light at the end of the tunnel.”
Vaccination plan order
It begins in nursing homes and nursing homes with residents over 65 and employees. High-risk groups with defined pre-existing diseases, as well as nursing and health personnel in hospitals, ordinations, rescue organizations, and social services also have the highest priority.
