Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz wants to prevent the current economic and labor crisis “by all means”. A “series of talks” is planned in the coming weeks to secure jobs.

Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) wants to make the issue of “work” a central political issue in the next six months, along with the fight against the corona pandemic. In addition to the health crisis, a sustained economic and labor crisis must be prevented “by all means”, the APA head of government said in a statement. “We are fighting a three-way battle: the fight for every COVID patient, the fight for every company, and the fight for every job,” Kurz said.

“We will fight for every job”

“Work will be our central theme in the coming months. Where there is a threat of company closure or where people are considering emigrating abroad, we will fight with all our strength for every job,” said the Chancellor. The global economic crisis also presents Austria with “enormous challenges”. “We are an export-oriented country and important markets are currently collapsing. Entire sectors such as tourism are being paralyzed.” Kurz referred to the increasing number of infections that trigger travel advisories and thus reduce consumption, “which ultimately destroys jobs.”

“Austria now needs an unprecedented alliance between politics, employees and employers,” said the head of government. “Closing a business means not only ruin for all entrepreneurs, but also the existence of all employees and their families. That is why I will personally do everything possible to ensure that we can counter the effects of the global economic crisis of the best possible way and that the people of the country continue to have jobs. ” As a measure, the ÖVP president wants to expand the existing aid programs – “and use specific instruments with the labor base and short-time work”. “Also, I will fight for all the jobs on the site,” promises Kurz.

Kurz plans “a series of talks”

Therefore, in the coming days and weeks he is planning “a series of talks”, for example with state governors, economic researchers, experts and the social partners. To get started, Kurz will meet Upper Austrian Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) in Linz on Tuesday. Ongoing discussions between the federal government and the state government about saving jobs at truck and bus manufacturer MAN will deepen. At the end of September, the group had terminated the employment and location agreements for the German and Austrian (Steyr) plants for financial reasons.
