Vienna and western Austria are currently hot spots of the corona pandemic in the public domain. However, this is only part of the truth, because Vienna, Tyrol and Vorarlberg also test significantly more, which of course means that you will find what you are looking for more often. In Vienna, the staff was also increased.
If you take last Saturday, for example, which essentially represents Friday’s tests, 6,803 tests were completed in Vienna in a 24-hour comparison. In Carinthia, at the other end of the scale, it was only 208, in Salzburg 294. This is shown by the figures available to APA from the daily data transmission.
The orange color of the traffic light also due to many tests.
They were much more diligent in testing on the much smaller Vorarlberg at 1,268 and in Tyrol at 1,440. It is precisely these federal states that, like Vienna, are having some image problem with individual orange-colored districts, also due to their consistent evidence.
This is not just a snapshot emerging from new clusters. With 70,929 tests, Vorarlberg is far ahead of Carinthia and Salzburg and Burgenland, which clearly ranks in the rear with a very low overall number of infected people.
Another image emerges with contact tracing, that is, tracing people who have been in close contact with an infected person (K1). Out of a total of 28,797 cases, as of Saturday, the Viennese authorities have carried out no less than 20,400 relevant investigations to prevent further spread. For comparison: in Carinthia there were 30. Of course, there are also significantly fewer confirmed cases in the southernmost state that need to be investigated.
Interesting figures also with hospital occupation
If you go beyond the weekend, which does not give a realistic picture of the number of tests, an interesting picture emerges regarding the occupation of beds in hospitals. As of Monday morning, there were still 10,004 normal beds available nationwide for corona cases, with Upper Austria at 2,837, followed by Lower Austria and Vienna, making up the top of available capacities.
Intensive care beds for confirmed cases remained 783 free, with Vienna ranking first with 290. Currently, a total of 47 intensive care beds were filled with corona cases on Monday, 208 in normal wards, with more than the half of the cases in the federal capital in both categories.
Crown crisis: Vienna depends on more staff
Vienna goes its own way in the fight against the corona pandemic with a particularly large number of tests, which then expiates in terms of image with a particularly large number of officially confirmed cases. You don’t want to abandon this strategy to avoid further spread. Therefore, the staff will increase even more.
Official figures show how difficult the situation is. There have been 2,491 new infections in the last two weeks. In order to know their surroundings, 19,928 contact persons had to be identified in the first category and 2,315 in the second category.
In order to deal with this attack, it relies on an increase in personnel. Currently, the 1450 hotline employs 400 people, 270 of whom answer calls and 130 medical personnel. This staff will be further increased, as highlighted by Health Councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ) on Monday evening at “ZiB2”. Next week, 25 medical students will support the team in one more step.
You also need additional staff for contact tracing, that is, to investigate contact persons who have come into contact with infected people. Here 200 more people will be accepted with immediate effect.
As expected in the hacker’s office, faster tests will also result from the additional use of gargle tests. These have the advantage that evidence does not have to be removed from suspected cases by doctors or paramedics, but can also be placed in front of the door by simple messengers. This means that the city relies less on properly qualified personnel and can handle more tests. Of course, the question remains whether laboratories, partly private, can or want to evaluate tests more quickly, ultimately a financial question, because there should still be resources here.
