The number of new corona infections recorded in Germany has reached a new high of 19,059 cases in one day. This comes from information from the Robert Koch Institute on Saturday morning. The previous record the day before was 18,681 cases. On Saturday a week ago, the health authorities informed the RKI of 14,714 new infections.
In late September, Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) warned that there could be 19,200 new infections a day by Christmas. Current values are only partially comparable to spring as significantly more testing is now being done and more infections are being discovered as a result.
According to the RKI, a total of 518,753 people in Germany have been infected with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic (until October 31 at 12:00 am). The number of deaths related to the virus rose by 103 as of Saturday to a total of 10,452.
The number of views, or R-value for short, was 1.06 in Germany according to the RKI situation report on Friday (previous day: 0.97). This means that one infected person infects another. The R value represents the infection process from approximately one and a half weeks earlier.
In addition, the RKI includes the so-called seven-day R in its management report. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value was 1.21 on Friday. It shows the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.
The federal and state governments agreed on Wednesday to break the second wave of corona infections with strict contact restrictions for citizens and an extensive shutdown of all leisure activities. This is to prevent an uncontrollable spread of the epidemic. The measures will be applied from next Monday (November 2) and will last until the end of November.
