Record number of tests last week
Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) emphasized in a broadcast on Sunday that a record high was reached this week with more than 100,000 tests. According to the ministry, there have been an average of 13,200 tests so far in September. The minister stressed that more tests are currently being carried out than ever in Austria. The goal of 15,000 tests per day, announced by the federal government in March, is still a long way off, at least when calculating the weekly average.
Anschober confirmed that not only suspected cases are examined, but also specific people without symptoms in risk areas. This is one of several causes of the increased number of infections, but overall, the infection rate in Austria is too high for the moment, Anschober said.
The cause of many infections: returning travelers

When it comes to new infections, the highest number of 319 were registered again in the federal capital on Sunday. In Vienna, 4.39 people are actively infected; according to the city, about 20,000 people are in quarantine. There were 94 additional cases in 24 hours in Lower Austria (994 actively infected), 62 in Tyrol (719 actively infected) and 49 in Upper Austria (720 actively infected). Vorarlberg recorded 38 new infections (420 actively infected) in the epidemiological registry (EMS), Salzburg 21 (192 actively infected) and Styria 13 (465 actively infected). In Carinthia, eight additional people infected with Covid-19 were registered, making the southernmost federal state the only one with an infected number below 100 to 89.
