The coronavirus pandemic poses new challenges for couples. A study from the University of Innsbruck now shows that this has little influence on relationship satisfaction. As the university announced via broadcast Monday, growing discontent could not be seen.
“Surprisingly, we were unable to confirm in our comprehensive study that there were more conflicts or separations during the pandemic,” said study leader Marcel Zentner, a professor at the Institute of Psychology. The opposite has even been proven: above all, those who were already satisfied with their relationship were mostly also after the outbreak of the pandemic.

However, the scientists were able to observe that relationship satisfaction and sexual satisfaction initially changed, especially in couples who did not live together. Especially at the beginning of the pandemic, there was a collapse in relationship satisfaction among people who did not live together, especially in terms of sexual satisfaction. However, it seems that the couples recovered a bit in November and reached their level of satisfaction before the pandemic, ”said Julia Vigl, co-head of the study. Above all, people with a safe relationship style, that is, with little fear of being abandoned or cheated on, were more satisfied during Corona.
In the study, the scientists wanted to determine what role the influences related to the pandemic, the aspects of the relationship itself and the personality aspects of the participants play. To do this, the researchers analyzed the relationship satisfaction of couples during the pandemic in a longitudinal study at a total of four measurement points.
In the first measurement, shortly after the outbreak, more than 3,000 people from more than 60 countries participated in the study. The other two surveys were conducted individually after ten days each. Finally, in November 2020, the participants were surveyed for the fourth time.
