Almost two weeks after a lockdown began, the number of new daily corona infections in Israel surpassed the 9,000 mark for the first time. The Health Ministry announced Thursday night that 9,013 new cases had been registered the previous day, more than ever in a day. With 124 new infections in 24 hours, according to Palestinian information, there was also a record in the Gaza Strip.

The pandemic in Israel initially ran smoothly, also due to the strict course of the government. However, after the relaxation in May, the number of cases soared. A closure with restrictions such as exit restrictions has been in effect since September 18; last Friday the measures were tightened. On Thursday night, the coronavirus cabinet decided to extend the lockdown for three days until October 14.

40 percent of an ultra-Orthodox community

More recently, ultra-Orthodox Arab and Jewish neighborhoods, where large families often live together in a confined space, have been hit the hardest by the increase in the number of cases. Government coronavirus commissioner Ronni Gamzu said that according to consistent reports, 40 percent of the most recently positive people came from the ultra-Orthodox community.

Many members of the Arab minority and many strictly religious Jews felt that they were not represented by the State of Israel even before the crisis began. Sometimes they live in a kind of parallel world and follow the guidelines of their own leadership rather than those of the state.

According to the police on Thursday, three synagogues were closed in the city of Bnei Brak, where many ultra-Orthodox live, because there were many people there against the rules of Corona. Many strict religious people had reportedly not adhered to Crown regulations on previous holidays.
