In view of the possible further tightening of the crown’s measures, education officials in the Austrian federal states spoke again in a video conference on Monday in favor of keeping compulsory schools open. This urgent appeal was made to the federal government, as a spokesperson for the president of the conference of state education officials, Salzburg State Councilor Maria Hutter (ÖVP), told the APA.

Due to growing rumors and discussions about the threat of more school closures in Austria, State Councilor for Education Hutter invited the federal states to a video conference with Education Minister Heinz Faßmann (ÖVP) on Monday afternoon. The result was clear. “Education officials from all parties have spoken clearly and unanimously in favor of keeping compulsory schools open as long as this is somehow justifiable.”

Compulsory schools: appeal to the federal government

An urgent call was made to those responsible at the federal level to include the general social impact in such planning and considerations. “The first priority is the education of our children, which, especially in compulsory schooling, cannot be completely replaced by distance education,” he emphasized. Furthermore, the closure of compulsory schools would have massive effects on parents, who often face intractable problems due to duty of care. This would have a massive impact on the healthcare system and subsequently the entire economy.
