Premiere in Crown times: The Austrian Armed Forces militia is convened for the first time in the Second Republic.

SALZBURG Today (May 4), 2,300 militiamen in 13 companies in Austria entered the field service. The 3rd Jäger Company of the Salzburg Jäger Battalion was convened in Salzburg. The company is tasked with replacing the postponed assistants after completing the three-week assignment. They should then be deployed primarily at border control points with Germany on security police assistance missions and assigned to support health authorities.

Mix of experienced militia specialists and younger soldiers.

Soldiers from the Salzburg militia company moved to the Schwarzenberg headquarters in Wals-Siezenheim early in the morning of May 4, 2020, already reinforced with a field kitchen squad and vehicle maintenance personnel. The men are made up partly of experienced militia specialists and partly of younger soldiers who have completed basic military service in the past five years.

During admission control, fever was measured and a risk assessment questionnaire had to be completed to reduce the risk of introduction of coronavirus.

Update basic knowledge and prepare for assistance.

All of the militiamen who were summoned received their military training during basic military service, during additional courses and exercises. “In the first few weeks, the basic knowledge is updated and the soldiers are specially prepared for their assignment to the deployment of the security police. Mainly security and control activities are carried out, with a special focus on hygiene and self-protection,” said the colonel. Stefan Haselwanter, commander of Jäger 8 Battalion.

The militia is slated to deploy before July 31, when members of the Federal Armed Forces present must take over assistance if necessary.
