Due to the increasing number of infections abroad, Hungary will close its borders to foreign tourists from 1 September.

In view of the increasing number of infections, the Hungarian national government is tightening the crown regulations and closing the country’s borders as of September 1. This was announced by Foreign Minister Gergely Gulyas in Budapest on Friday. Foreign citizens can only enter Hungarian territory with justified exceptions. Transit corridors are insured, Gulyas stressed.

Hungarian citizens need PCR tests or a 14-day quarantine

The closure is intended to minimize the risk of the virus being introduced, as most infections can be traced back to residence abroad, Gulyas said. Hungarian citizens returning to Hungary, on the other hand, must remain in quarantine for 14 days, unless they have two negative coronavirus tests during the quarantine, which were taken two days apart. The costs of the tests are borne by those affected, since “even the much richer Germany has also switched to this scheme,” said the minister. The Foreign Ministry in Vienna declined to comment on the Hungarian border closures for the time being.

The strictest measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of particularly vulnerable older people, children preparing for the start of school and the smooth running of the economy, Gulyas explained. School classes in Hungary will resume from September 1, so the situation in schools and possible renewed closures will be assessed separately. In any case, it is advisable to refrain from celebrations at the beginning of school, said the minister. The new ordinances will be valid for one month and will be discussed again in October.

The measures also affect the UEFA Super Cup

Despite the closure of the border, the UEFA Super Cup between Champions League winners Bayern Munich and Europa League winners FC Sevilla will take place on September 24 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. According to UEFA’s plan, both teams will each receive 3,000 tickets for their fans. However, these should only fly in possession of two negative corona tests. They would then take buses directly to the stadium and after the match they would return to the airport in the same way, the minister said.

Gulyas himself was in quarantine until Friday. He had participated in an event last Saturday where one of the participants tested positive for the crown afterwards. However, two subsequent tests were negative.
