If the number of infections continues to increase dramatically, further measures may be necessary throughout Austria in his opinion. Haslauer warned last week that the hospital’s capacity in his state would be depleted in two weeks.
Half of this path has already been covered: “Then the staff will be changed, the beds will be changed, and then hip operations that may have already been postponed will have to be changed again.” Haslauer also sees the tracking of new infections “at the border” due to the “explosive” development of infections.
Haslauer demands more money from the federal government
To cope with the “huge additional costs” related to the crown in hospitals, Haslauer demands more money from the federal states. Because fighting the pandemic is a federal task. Haslauer talks about a loss of 1.5 billion euros that he would like to negotiate with the federal government. “I noticed a certain hesitation,” criticized the governor for the lack of will to dialogue.
The age of the infected increases again
Haslauer finds it understandable that the government has recently cracked down on crown measures at the national level and has relied on regionally graded interventions. “But it can happen if all the development in Austria gallops in such a way that the federal government takes national action again.” In any case, he is concerned that the age of those infected is increasing again. The decisive factor is above all the contacts in the private sector: “It is not just young people who party.” It’s also about senior citizens’ birthdays and club gatherings.
“We have to take care of everyone”
Haslauer wants to avoid school closures “if possible.” However, high school students in Salzburg could switch to turn-based lessons after the fall break. Haslauer rejects hotelier Christian Harisch’s suggestion to quickly conduct a multi-week “soft close” to save winter tourism: “It is the right of a capable hotelier to see his branch in the center of the world, but you have to pay attention to all. “
SPOs must also have a working base
Haslauer would have nothing against it if the government coordinated its Crown ordinances in addition to the political offices of the ÖVP governors with those of the SPÖ, as he said. The fact that the Finance Ministry had only sent the corresponding information in advance to the “turquoise” countries was met with massive criticism by the SPÖ this week. Haslauer said he could send the working papers to all the offices. But this requires a certain relationship of trust.
The fact that Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) erased the red governors’ criticisms of the selective information policy on Sunday in the “Kurier” as a “trifle” from the table is outrageous to the SPÖ. He accused the chancellor of arrogance and “petty politics.”
