Coronavirus: 1,029 new infections in Austria

The ministries of health and the interior publish current coronavirus figures every day. The number of new infections is usually in the foreground. On Monday night’s “ARD extra” television show, virologists and doctors in Germany now question its informational value. The creed: We shouldn’t be afraid of a spike as long as the number of tough runs doesn’t explode. More on this in the video above.

Hendrik Streeck, a virologist at Bonn University Hospital, says, for example: “The infection figures only say something in a limited way, because only a small proportion really need medical attention. He also points out that a mild course or infection without symptoms would not contribute as much to the overall infection process.

Nine infections and hospital admissions

Torsten Bauer, head of the lung ward at the Helios Emil von Behring Clinic in Berlin, would like to steer clear of the number of new infections. For him they are not very significant, he says in the “ARD extra” article: “I would have liked to compare the number of hospital admissions. Because the absolute number of infections for medical professionals only says how many were infected and not how many were really sick. “

Streeck advocates “conscious normalcy”: everyone with a difficult course should receive the best possible care, but at the same time we have to start “living with the virus.”

Hospitalizations for coronavirus in Austria

In Austria, according to data from the Ministry of Health this Tuesday (9 am), 387 normal beds and 101 intensive care beds are occupied with Covid 19 cases. By comparison, there are 8,496 confirmed coronavirus cases that are not hospitalized. Since the beginning of April, the occupancy of intensive care beds has decreased steadily and has increased again since the beginning of September. The number of Austrians who tested positive is still highest in the 15-34 age group. You can find the current numbers HERE.
