To give the corona virus the least possible chance, 15,000 students and 1,200 teachers must take the corona gargle test every three to four weeks. With this periodic monitoring, the Ministry of Education wants to have an overview of the infection situation.

The monitoring results must show whether the applicable safety and hygiene measures are sufficient or need to be refined. “I can only do that if I know the number of infections,” emphasized molecular biologist Michael Wagner of the University of Vienna, who was in charge of the study, at the presentation of the screening program in mid-August.

According to the department of education, students and teachers from 250 AHS elementary, middle and lower schools in all federal states are evaluated. Participation in the representative study is voluntary, parents of students must agree. Each participant must gargle about ten times, the scheduled start is at the end of September.
