In view of the growing number of coronavirus cases, mouth and nasal protection will be mandatory in Viennese markets from Saturday. The Environment Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) announced on Thursday. Measures regarding distance rules are also being intensified again.
Formally, the obligation to dress is an order from the market police. Because in many areas there is still no possibility for a federal state like Vienna to impose its own measures, Sima said. The corresponding federal ordinance has not yet entered into force. However, market regulation was examined and it was concluded that a mask requirement could be prescribed on the basis of it.

In cases where visitors refuse to use the protection, penalties could be imposed, he said. Those who don’t understand face a fine of 50 euros. However, most people are supposed to adhere to the guidelines. The agreement applies to both competitors and consumers.
According to Sima, the market office has also created more space between the farmers market stalls and increased staff. In some markets, open spaces were used to expand the area. Visitors are constantly informed of the distance rules with megaphones. The marks on the ground should also remember this. The markets of Vienna took similar measures already in spring. Visitors were also asked to wear masks.
Increased staff It will also be complemented by a mobile workgroup that can be on site quickly if needed and informs visitors of distance regulations. Ulli Sima recommends that market visitors visit the markets, especially during the week, to avoid crowds on the weekends.
Individual measures for markets throughout Vienna
Carmelite market: Haidgasse and “Im wird” will also be locked to create additional space for the farmers market.
Rochusmarkt: Here a parking lane will be blocked so there is more space for the farmers market.
Schlingermarkt: A parking lane in Floridsdorf will also be closed to create alternative options for the farmers market.
Naschmarkt: The free space is also used for the farmers market.
Hannover Market: In the 20th arrondissement, the consumer-free open spaces are also used for farmers markets.
Brunnenmarkt: Yppenplatz is also used by the farmers market and, if necessary, is also divided into piazetta or Brunnengasse.
Viktor-Adlermarkt: The farmers market stalls will be distributed throughout Viktor-Adler-Platz. That creates much more space and large gaps.
