5,984 new corona virus infections were recorded in Austria on Tuesday morning in the last 24 hours. In the previous week, more than 6,100 new infections were registered on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reported.
“It seems that we have reached the ceiling and stabilization, albeit at a dramatically high level. Now the numbers have to gradually fall massively,” said Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens).
Antigen testing in pharmacies
It is a race against time that capacity limits are not exceeded in intensive care units, Anschober said. He stressed that the test volume will be further expanded. According to GPs, antigen testing is now also possible in pharmacies upon notification.
“They have to report the positive results and have them confirmed by a PCR test. In this way we significantly increase the total number of tests and access to tests and at the same time we have the security of the implementation of the requirement of notification of positive results ”, emphasized Anschober.
More tests
This increases the total number of tests. According to the Minister of Health, you can only partially read the number of tests that are statistically displayed every day. By the way, 29,050 PCR tests were recorded in the last 24 hours; the previous week’s average was significantly higher, with an average of 31,079 tests administered daily.
On the first day of the confinement, the Minister of Health called on the patients not to postpone the trip to the health center for treatment and monitoring, but to do so in the interest of their own health. “Take care of your routine and preventive checkups. The flu shot is just as important,” Anschober emphasized. This year it was also included in the free childhood vaccination program.
76,165 active confirmed cases
Even if the number of new infections in Austria is decreasing, an average of 7,104 new infections were added daily during the last seven days. The seven-day incidence per 100,000 residents on Tuesday was 558.7. There were a total of 76,165 confirmed active cases in Austria, 890 fewer than on Monday.
The number of intensive care patients rose in one day from 46 to 658, a total of 4,525 Covid-19 patients had to be treated in hospitals on Tuesday. That’s an increase of almost 1,000 people in one week: 976 patients had to be hospitalized additionally in the last seven days. The number of intensive care patients has increased particularly significantly, by 122 in the past week, which is an increase of almost 23 percent.
58 dead since Monday
Another 58 people have died as a result of the coronavirus disease since Monday. Thus, there have been 1,945 deaths in Austria since the beginning of the pandemic. In the last week, an average of 64 people died every day.
A total of 214,597 people have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 since the start of the pandemic. 136,487 are considered recovered.
