Due to the tense situation in Corona, the “maximum alert level” will be declared in and around Paris on Monday. This was announced by the office of Prime Minister Jean Castex. Specific restrictions associated with the new stage will be announced at a press conference on Monday, he said.

According to the office, the bars will be closed for a period of two weeks. On the other hand, restaurants should be able to stay open with greater Corona precautionary measures. Paris residents were also encouraged to work from home. This is now “more important than ever,” he said.

On Monday, the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo and the prefect of police Didier Lallement are due to present more details about the restrictions. According to the Castex office, they should apply not only to the city of Paris but also to the three immediately adjacent departments.

The maximum level of alert already applies in Guadeloupe and Marseille

The step is not a surprise. Health Minister Olivier Véran had already said late last week that the situation in the capital and the suburbs had recently deteriorated rapidly.

In the fight against the corona pandemic, the “maximum alert level” has so far been applied in the French overseas territory of Guadeloupe and in Marseille. In the southern French port city, restaurants and bars had to close; there were massive protests. In Paris, bars close at 10 pm, restaurants can stay open longer. However, they are only allowed to serve alcohol in connection with a meal.

France recorded 12,565 new corona infections nationwide in 24 hours, authorities announced overnight. The day before, there were 16,972 new infections, significantly more. France has been hit hard by the Covid 19 pandemic, with more than 32,000 dead so far.
