The number of deaths and new infections from coronavirus remains at a high level. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), German health authorities have recorded 19,528 new cases and 731 deaths in one day. As of Tuesday of the previous week, 14,432 new infections and 500 deaths were reported; however, there was no data from Saxony at the time, which was reported later. The highest value with 33,777 reported infections came on Friday, but included 3,500 late reports. The previous peak in deaths was reached last Wednesday with 952.
However, the number of new infections is only partially comparable to previous weeks, as the RKI, among other things, has adjusted the recommendations for corona testing on who should still be tested.
The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants (seven-day incidence) reported to health authorities within seven days was reported by the RKI on Tuesday at 197.6. This is the highest level since the pandemic began. Saxony achieved by far the highest value: there the seven-day incidence is 426.8, that is, more than double the national average. It is followed by Thuringia with a value of 299.4 and Bavaria with 215.9. The lowest value is recorded in Schleswig-Holstein with 93.6.
Recently, the number of deaths tended to increase, which was expected after the sharp increase in new infections. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection rose to 27,006 as of Tuesday.
The RKI has counted 1,530,180 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (until midnight on December 22). Around 1,136,700 people are estimated to have recovered.
According to RKI’s management report on Monday night, the seven-day national R-value was 0.98 (previous day: 1.04). This means that 100 infected people infect 98 more people. The value represents the appearance of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection rate decreases.
