More tightening and measures in the fight against the coronavirus in Austria will take effect on Monday. Private celebrations are limited to 10 people in the indoor area;

In the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the federal government announced a further tightening on Thursday. Social contacts will be further restricted throughout Austria; in the future, only ten people will be allowed in private celebrations and indoor events. In gastronomy, the MNS is also mandatory for guests. Consumption is only possible sitting down.

Drastic tightening of the crown measures as of Monday

The measures will be applied throughout Austria from next Monday. The tightening was announced at a press conference by Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP), Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens), Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) and Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP). As an additional measure, the extension of the VAT reduction for one year was announced.

Limited to 10 people for private celebrations

Funerals, religious events and demonstrations, etc. up to a maximum of ten people are exempt from the restriction for indoor events and celebrations.

Gastronomy: Requirement and consumption of mask only sitting.

In gastronomy, masks are mandatory from Monday, in addition to service personnel, for guests who are not seated, that is, on their way to the table or to the bathroom, “where there is movement,” Kurz said. Protection of the mouth and nose is also a general obligation to wear outdoors at markets and trade shows. Everything that gives pleasure is “a place of contagion,” said the Chancellor. Infections in the past have mainly occurred indoors and in private contacts. There was more than a “doubling of the number of newly infected,” Kurz said. Not identical and dramatic throughout, but the numbers are increasing throughout Austria.

The government wants to avoid a second blockade

These are “restrictions that hurt, but are necessary to prevent a second lockdown,” said Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP). The government is “aware that it means to resign again.” However, it is important to prevent the “catastrophic consequences” that a further lockdown would mean, Kurz told the German government press conference.

The new measures will take effect on Monday at midnight.
