There is no space in the intensive care unit: clinics in Vienna and Lower Austria are affected. It will also be tight in Tyrol: only eleven free beds in intensive care units.
The effects of record infections are being felt strongly in healthcare. On Saturday, 1,177 Covid patients were receiving hospital treatment. That’s 119 more than the day before (+ 11%). Big concern: the last time there were such high figures was in March, at the height of the first wave.
Currently, 175 of these patients must be treated in an intensive care unit. That is a 35% increase compared to the previous week. The official bodies are still trying to calm down: there are still enough free beds. A look at the absolute figures shows that they are right: 637 intensive care beds are still available in Austria.
Problem: these capacities are not evenly distributed in Austria. Example: Eight intensive care beds were occupied in Tyrol on Friday, so there is only room for eleven patients.
The first hospitals have to turn away patients, there is no more space in intensive care units. The main point of contact in Vienna is the Favoriten Clinic (known as Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Spital, SMZ Süd). All Covid-19 intensive care patient beds are taken here. Other cases must be outsourced. The AKH is the first stop, then continue to the Floridsdorf Clinic.
Alarm also in Lower Austria: according to reports, there are not enough staff for Covid care at the Mödling Clinic. He denied the house itself. The situation will soon get worse: the current increase in cases will be felt in hospitals in about two weeks.
