Cloppenburg (Lower Saxony) – Terrible accident in the Cloppenburg district! An Opel crashes into a tree. The driver (37) died immediately, her eleven-year-old son later died in hospital. Other prisoners, including children, are at risk of death.
Friday night around 6:50 pm: A serious traffic accident occurs near Saterland, 40 kilometers from the Dutch border. An Opel Zafira heads straight off the road and crashes head-on into a tree.
A 37-year-old mother is at the wheel of the minivan. With them: their four children (2, 8, 10, 11), another mother (32) and their two daughters (9, 13) in the passenger seat. However, according to the police, the vehicle is only approved for seven people. At least one person was not wearing a seat belt!

Any help comes too late for the driver, she dies in the accident. The other inmates are all seriously injured.
Rescuers remove the 32-year-old man and six children from the crash car, while the 37-year-old is trapped in the driver’s seat.

Four rescue helicopters are in action. Three from Germany, one from the nearby Netherlands. First responders take care of the injured children and the passenger before they can be taken to nearby hospitals. The eleven-year-old boy is flown to a clinic in the Netherlands. There he then succumbs to his worst injuries.
