Islamist tweets are causing a stir on Twitter. It is not clear if it can really be interpreted as a confession letter.

At least one police officer was killed in a shooting in central Vienna near Schwedenplatz on Monday night. The event took place near the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien (IKG) and its synagogue. One perpetrator was arrested after an exchange of gunfire and possible others were being sought.

Meanwhile, tweets on Twitter are causing a stir. An alleged Islamist user posted a tweet from the Viennese police: “I swear to Allah you haven’t seen anything from us yet.

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) said there were several wounded, possibly dead. It was a terrorist attack that was still going on. According to various previously unconfirmed media reports, the language ranged from three to eight deaths. At the time of the attack, there were probably no people in the city’s temple on Seitenstettengasse and on the premises of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien (IKG). Community members were asked not to leave the house, the IKG said. The police also generally asked not to leave apartments or bars around Schwedenplatz.

Several videos circulated of the incident in central Vienna on Monday night, showing gunmen firing savagely in the city center. In one video, a victim, possibly a police officer, can even be seen falling to the ground at Schwedenplatz. A man with a Kalashnikov-style weapon runs down a cobbled alley and shoots. A witness yells “asshole” from a window.

Three wounded were admitted to clinics of the Vienna Health Association after the attack in central Vienna. That’s what Christoph Mierau, spokesman for the health network, said at the request of the APA. People are likely to have suffered more serious injuries. Mierau couldn’t tell if they were gunshot wounds or wounded from an explosion.

Meanwhile, the Vienna police appealed that no videos or photos of the events be posted on social media. “This endangers both the emergency services and the civilian population.”
