Religious communities are also complying with the renewed closure due to the corona virus according to the government.

The 16 recognized churches and religious societies will not hold any public religious services after the Christmas holidays, specifically from December 28 to January 17, Education Minister Susanne Raab (ÖVP) said in a broadcast Monday. However, places of worship will remain open for personal prayers.

Exception for Orthodox Christmas

An exception will apply to all believers who celebrate Orthodox Christmas on the Julian calendar on January 6 and 7. According to the government, they will be able to carry out public services under “the strictest safety and hygiene measures.”

“Even if the fight against the corona pandemic has been with us for so long and has already demanded a lot of us, the next few months will again be particularly challenging,” Raab said.
