Christmas markets are canceled this year – ski areas only open on December 24

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) said Tuesday that he was aware that Christmas would not be business as usual. But he had good news for Christmas Eve itself: a total of ten people, regardless of how many households, can come together on December 24 to celebrate together. By the way, this also applies to New Year’s Eve.

Austrians will have to pass the time until then without the chic advent. Why Christmas markets there will be none this year, the government announced when it announced the relaxation measures on Tuesday. As in the “Lockdown light” in early November, the catering will also be closed. It should not reopen until January 7, as long as the “current infection situation” allows.

Even with skiing it becomes quite difficult in Advent. The lifts should not open until December 24; Hotels belonging to many ski areas will be closed until at least January 7. “Cable cars, gondolas and climbing aids cannot be used for recreational purposes until December 23,” says the government plan. After that, mouth and nose protection is also mandatory in the waiting and boarding areas.
