Christian Lindner is coming under fire after his appearance at the FDP party conference at the weekend. There are allegations of sexism against him for his speech after Linda Teuteberg’s departure as general secretary. Now Lindner has again apologized for his words. “I appreciate Linda Teuteberg, and I’m sorry if I get the impression that I’ve shown too little respect,” Lindner said Monday in an interview with RTL television. He had previously asked for “your indulgence” on Twitter.
In her speech Saturday, Lindner said, “I like to think about it, Linda, we’ve started the day together about 300 times in the last few months.” Then she paused for art, rolled her eyes, and continued, “I’m talking about our daily phone call about the political situation, not what you think now!”
Now Lindner said he “just wanted to relax” his speech. I am very sorry for all those who feel attacked ”. If Teuteberg feels attacked, “I’d like to apologize to her as well,” Lindner said. She had “chosen a formulation that was clearly misleading to many,” Lindner said. “She didn’t mean like that at all.” She then had contact with Teuteberg about the matter.
He made “an old man’s joke against a woman,” Lindner said. That was not her intention, at first she did not understand the fact.
“Better not to joke than to joke badly”
After the speech, there was massive criticism on social media. It was noted, for example, that Lindner had already made a sexist joke similar to the one she now apologizes for, in 2017. At the time she said, “I woke up this morning with Claudia Roth.”
Regarding Linda Teuteberg’s speech, Renate Künast of the Greens tweeted: “It’s terrible!”
The federal spokesperson for the Green Youth, Anna peters, accused Lindner of “chauvinism par excellence.” Konstantin von Notz, Peters’s party colleague wrote: “It is better not to joke than to joke badly.”
“#MissionAltherrenwitz instead of #Mission Aufbruch”, wrote Matthias hauer by the CDU alluding to the slogan of the party congress.
Lindner now explained the incident with the way he delivered the speeches. Develop this freely from keywords. “Of course, individual formulation cannot always be as successful and take advantage of spontaneity,” Lindner said. The price is then “miss one”.
You don’t want to take any special precautionary measures in future public appearances. As you speak, you will still not be working with formulated manuscripts.
