“Clear and Final Warning”: Drosten Calls for Quick Adjustment
| Reading time: 2 minutes
Berlin virologist Christian Drosten warns for a long time if everyday life does not close quickly. He has an optimistic forecast for school operations.
WITHTo contain the corona pandemic in Germany, virologist Christian Drosten has spoken out in favor of a rapid tightening of measures. “It is true that we absolutely have to do something now,” the Charité scientist said in the “Coronavirus Update” on Tuesday on NDR-Info. The holiday season is very likely to cause an increase in the number of cases. If there is no readjustment now, there is the threat of a lockdown “at the end of January and beyond all of February” with massive consequences for the economy.
Drosten is one of the experts who contributed to a statement released Tuesday by the Leopoldina National Academy of Sciences. It is recommended to use holidays and the change of year for a “total lockdown”. From December 24 to at least January 10, “public life throughout Germany should be practically inactive.” As of December 14, contacts should be reduced to an “absolute minimum”.
The virologist said that perhaps the article should be understood as “a clear and final warning from science.” If politicians decide otherwise, they will no longer have chosen science.
At the beginning of the year, the virologist can imagine a return to normal school operations. “I don’t want to be a preacher for school closings,” he says on the podcast. “I think it is very important that the school continues to function.” But you have to face the reality that schools are also part of the infection process. Drosten advocates alternating lessons: “If you divide a class into two parts, you prevent half of the infections.”
