A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured by a steel beam in Doren on Friday. Now the hospital announced that the boy has died.
A 50-year-old truck driver from Kissing in Germany drove his 13-year-old son to a company in Doren on Friday to collect steel beams. In order to load the steel beams onto the truck’s trailer, the man parked his truck on the side of the company hallway. A U-shaped steel beam weighing 719 kg was to be loaded onto the trailer.
This steel beam was hoisted into the room by a 53-year-old worker from the company using an indoor crane and briefly placed on a piece of wood to reposition the steel beam. After the chains and straps attached around the steel beam have been put into place, the steel beam must be raised again using a remote controlled indoor crane. The truck driver’s 13-year-old son was standing on the opposite short side of the U-shaped steel beam.
The boy wanted to catch steel beams with his hands.
When the chains needed to be tightened, the steel beam became unstable and slowly tipped to one side. The 13-year-old then tried to stop the steel beam with his hands, which was impossible due to the weight of the steel beam. When the boy noticed this, he took a step back and was hit on the head by the falling steel beam. As a result, he suffered serious head injuries and was airlifted in the C8 helicopter to LKH-Feldkirch after receiving initial help at the crash site.
On Sunday evening, the Feldkirch hospital announced that the 13-year-old boy had died as a result of serious head injuries. The expert report is commissioned by the prosecution.
